Opera Wilmington board member takes the Wilson Center stage!

Tanya Hanano, a member of Opera Wilmington’s Board of Directors and student of Nancy King at UNCW, was the winner of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition (collegiate level). As a winner, she will perform as part of the symphony’s Jan. 26 concert, “Unfinished Business.”

Tanya, a physical therapist with NHRMC, is pursuing her lifelong dream of developing her talents as a singer. She is enrolled at UNCW and plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in music. You’ve seen Tanya in the ensemble of all Opera Wilmington productions and as a soloist at several of our concerts. Want to hear her on the big stage? Met star to perform in Myrtle Beach Feb. 7 –

Isabelle Leonard, who this season performs her Metropolitan Opera role debut as Melisande in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, will appear in concert Feb. 7 as part of the First Presbyterian Church concert series.  At $25 per person, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear this Grammy-Award-winning young mezzo up close and personal!

We wish there were an Opera Wilmington bus that could take interested folks to Myrtle Beach for the event, but sadly, we’re not yet in the transport business. However, the concert chair has offered to hold a block of tickets in the choir loft if interested individuals from Wilmington area would like to organize a group. Opera Wilmington receives grant from Arts Friendly Foundation

Opera Wilmington was one of five local arts organizations to be awarded a grant from the Arts Friendly Foundation, a new organization that aims to connect cultural groups with businesses that want to support the Wilmington area’s arts community. Craig Stinson, founder and president of Arts Friendly, has spent a busy 2018 raising funds from an expanding list of Arts Friendly companies, and he presented a check for $838 to each of the recipients at a special event Jan. 15.

In addition to Opera Wilmington, the current Arts Friendly cultural organizations are DREAMS of Wilmington, Thalian Association, Wilmington Art Association and Wilmington Jewish Film Festival. To learn more about Arts Friendly Foundation, click here.

Opera Wilmington to stage La Bohème in July 2019 –

La Bohème, Puccini’s beloved tale of young love among poor artists in mid-1800s Paris, will be Opera Wilmington’s selection for July 2019. Tickets will go on sale this spring. More information can be found here.
